Why Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Still Makes Me Laugh
If you walked into my room, there's a good chance you would find swim goggles on the floor, homework I forgot to finish, and at least one Diary of a Wimpy Kid book somewhere nearby.
I have been a huge fan of the series for years. Even now, when school gets stressful or swim practice gets exhausting, I still go back and reread the books because they never fail to make me laugh.
"Greg Heffley feels real. He is not a superhero. He is awkward, lazy sometimes, and constantly gets himself into terrible situations."
What makes the series special is that Greg Heffley feels real. He is not a superhero. He is awkward, lazy sometimes, and constantly gets himself into terrible situations. Honestly, that is probably why so many kids connect with him.
One thing I especially relate to is the swimming references in the books. As a competitive swimmer, those parts hit differently.
If you have read the series, you probably remember Greg's experiences with swim teams and public pools. They are always disasters. Whether he is freezing in the water, struggling during practice, or dealing with embarrassing moments at the pool, it somehow captures the chaos perfectly.
- Early morning alarms โฐ
- Chlorine everywhere
- Trying to act awake at school afterward
- Pretending your shoulders are not falling off after butterfly sets
Swimming is an amazing sport, but swimmers know the truth: sometimes practice feels less like training and more like survival.
Jeff Kinney somehow turns those kinds of moments into comedy. Even if Greg is terrible at swimming, the scenes still feel familiar to athletes because everyone has had awkward sports moments before.
One of the coolest moments for me as a fan was actually writing a letter to Jeff Kinney himself. I honestly did not expect anything back. He is one of the most famous authors in the world.
But somehow, I received a reply letter from him.
Getting that letter felt unreal. It reminded me that books are not just stories. They connect people. A book series that made me laugh in middle school ended up giving me a memory I will probably keep forever.
๐ธ I am planning to upload the letter in this blog โ it is definitely one of my favorite things I own.
This is also my very first blog post, so it feels right to write about something that has been part of my life for so long.
A lot of people think books have to be serious to matter. But honestly, making people laugh matters too. Diary of a Wimpy Kid made reading fun for millions of kids, including me.
"And if Jeff Kinney somehow reads this someday: thank you for making school disasters, embarrassing moments, and terrible swimming experiences feel legendary."
Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably go finish my homework before I accidentally turn into Rodrick-level responsible.
